Basic Information About Gold

The metals that are used to alloy with gold determine the final color of the gold alloy used in fine jewelry.

Yellow gold is the traditional gold used in fine jewelry. It is created with an alloy of gold, silver, and copper. 18-karat gold contains more gold than 14-karat gold, which is why 18-karat yellow gold has a richer yellow color.

White gold is the modern gold used in fine jewelry. It is created with an alloy of gold and white metals such as silver and palladium. Because of the gold that is in the alloy, white gold usually has a slight yellow tint. To enhance the whiteness, a hard, shiny, white metal known as rhodium is plated over white gold.

Over time, depending on the amount of wear on a piece of jewelry, the rhodium may wear away and reveal the original metal color with the slight yellow tint. A trained jeweler can re-plate your jewelry with rhodium to restore the whiteness.

Rose gold is alloyed with large amounts of copper and trace amounts of silver. The proportions are about one part of copper to three parts of 24-karat gold. The large amounts of copper in the alloy are what creates the beautiful pink color of rose gold.
